Meet Mac Deford

Mac Headshot .jpg

Mac Deford is a U.S. Coast Guard veteran, attorney, and experienced public servant who has spent his career fighting for working families and serving our nation.

After serving as a federal law enforcement officer in the U.S. Coast Guard, Mac became a trusted legal advisor to South Carolina’s cities and towns—guiding communities through crises, expanding access to affordable housing, strengthening environmental protections, and improving local infrastructure. Mac holds an undergraduate degree from The Citadel, a law degree from the Charleston School of Law, and an MBA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He lives in Mount Pleasant with his wife, son, and two dogs.

In 2024, Mac ran for Congress in South Carolina’s 1st District, earning nearly half the vote in a hard-fought Democratic primary. He’s now launched an exploratory committee to assess whether a run in 2026 is the best way to continue serving the Lowcountry—because Nancy Mace continues to sow division, dodge accountability, and refuses to stand up to Donald Trump’s chaos.

Some of the issues Mac is passionate about:

  • Holding the Trump administration accountable—including restoring Congressional authority over tariffs, which were recklessly abused to punish American consumers and businesses.

  • Safeguarding veterans' well-being by opposing policies that have led to significant job cuts within the Department of Veterans Affairs, jeopardizing essential healthcare services for those who have served our nation.

  • Protecting Social Security and ensuring it remains a sacred promise to every generation.

  • Defending civil liberties, including the right to free speech, due process, and bodily autonomy—because women’s rights are civil rights.

  • Fighting government overreach, particularly the assault on public education and our institutions of higher learning.

  • Reaffirming support for democratic institutions, including an independent judiciary and the rule of law.

This exploratory phase is about listening and learning—and funding a comprehensive poll of South Carolina’s 1st District to determine whether the path forward includes another run.
